Series background & context

Forbidden Weddings is best understood as Michelle Willingham's Castle Keyvnor set gathered under one banner. The books are Regency romances, but they do not unfold in an ordinary drawing-room world. They take place in and around a Cornish castle with a ghost problem, a family problem, and a strong habit of pushing people toward inconvenient truths.

Which is part of the charm.

The core books here are A Dance with the Devil, The Sweetest Christmas, and A Rake of Her Own. Each story follows a different couple, and each can be read on its own, but they are linked by place, mood, and the sense that Keyvnor is never just a backdrop. One story leans more gothic, another festive, another more bargain-and-scandal driven, yet the castle ties them together with the same slightly magical pressure.

Michelle Willingham uses that shared setting well. In A Dance with the Devil, the mood is shadowy and secretive, with hidden history and danger around the edges. The Sweetest Christmas turns Keyvnor into a holiday house party full of gingerbread and matchmaking. A Rake of Her Own brings in arranged expectations, social maneuvering, and a hero who badly needs money. The result is not a single continuous plot, but a set of connected Regency novellas that all benefit from the same haunted atmosphere.

Tone matters here. These are not dark gothic horror stories. The supernatural element is real, but it is there to stir things up, expose feelings, and occasionally trap two people in the exact situation they were trying to avoid. The romances stay front and center.

If you like your historical romance with a little mist, a little mischief, and a lot of emotional momentum, Forbidden Weddings works well. Read it for haunted-house energy, reluctant brides and grooms, and the very satisfying feeling that Castle Keyvnor knows more about everyone's love life than they do.
