Series background & context

Forbidden - The Townsend Twins Serial is one of the more unusual corners of Cali MacKay's catalog. The setup is intimate, secretive, and built for a serial format. Phoebe Nicholls washes up on a private island after fleeing an abusive ex, only to find herself pulled into the closed world of identical twins Hawke and Archer Townsend.

The island matters as much as the characters. It creates a sealed-in atmosphere where everyone is hiding something, and where even basic trust becomes slippery. Hawke is damaged and reclusive. Archer is more outward-facing and protective. Together they maintain the public fiction that a single famous artist, Jackson Townsend, exists instead of two brothers sharing one identity. That lie is easy enough to manage until Phoebe enters the picture.

Then everything gets complicated.

These books are erotic, but the core tension is not just sexual. It comes from identity, secrecy, and the fact that Phoebe is trying to recover from violence while falling for men who already live inside a carefully managed deception. The serial structure lets MacKay slow-burn the reveal, deepen the triangle, and keep the threat from Phoebe's past hovering over every choice they make.

Readers should know this works best as one continuous story, not four totally separate romances. The appeal is watching the situation tighten, emotionally and externally, until the brothers, Phoebe, and the danger following her can no longer be kept apart. If you like secluded settings, morally messy attraction, and romance that is a little darker and stranger than the usual billionaire setup, this is a strong fit. Start with Forbidden: Part 1 and keep going straight through if you can.
