For Love and Country Books in Order

The For Love and Country banner points to one of Jessica James's shorter historical projects, but the scale of feeling is still big. This is Revolutionary War romance with espionage at its core. Instead of a huge cast or a sprawling campaign novel, the story tightens around one woman, one officer, and the dangerous question of who can be trusted when every conversation may be overheard and every promise may cost something.

At the center is Sophia Adair, a woman living among Loyalists while privately committed to the Patriot cause. That alone gives the story its tension. She has to listen carefully, move carefully, and choose carefully, because one wrong word could expose her to the wrong people on either side. When she learns that someone close to Colonel Grant Morgan is feeding information to the British, doing nothing is not really an option.

Grant Morgan has his own problem. When Sophia comes under suspicion and is brought in for questioning, he has to decide whether she is a threat, a pawn, or the ally he desperately needs. That makes the book less about battlefield spectacle and more about nerve, judgment, and divided loyalty. The danger feels intimate, which suits the romance.

Short does not mean slight.

The setting matters because the American Revolution was not just armies in open fields. It was also households split by politics, neighbors watching neighbors, and private lives pulled into public conflict. James leans into that part of the era. The result is a story with secrecy, close calls, and a strong sense that devotion to a cause can sit right beside devotion to a person.

If you want a quick entry point into James's historical fiction, this is an easy place to start. It is cleaner and more compact than her big Civil War epics, but it still has the mix she returns to again and again, courage, duty, sacrifice, and a romance shaped by war.
