Series background & context

The Florida Girl FBI Mystery books follow Special Agent Alexa Landers, a newly minted FBI agent whose first posting throws her straight into the deep end. Instead of a gentle introduction, she’s sent to Miami and handed a case that seems impossible on paper.

In The Florida Girl, Alexa is tasked with solving the assassination of a Russian oligarch in one of the most secure, exclusive communities in the country. The victim is found dead in his pool on a man-made island where security is airtight and every resident has something to lose. Trying to work out how a killer got in—or whether they ever really left—pushes Alexa into a maze of power, money, and international tension.

The rest of the series keeps that mix of tropical luxury and lurking danger. Resort to Kill strands Alexa on a private island resort after a bombing wipes out a helicopter carrying a top Cuban diplomat, turning a supposed getaway into a locked-island investigation. Later books send her after runaways and ransom schemes, bodies dropping across the city, and a mysterious woman whose very identity raises bigger questions.

Alexa herself is smart, ambitious, and still finding her feet. She’s balancing the pressure of proving herself at the Bureau with the shock of adapting to Florida—a place where the weather, the wildlife, and the criminals all seem determined to kill you. The series doesn’t shy away from showing the toll the job takes, but it also lets her grow more confident and battle-hardened with each case.

Co-written with James Holt, these books lean into high-concept plots: political assassinations, conspiracies that tangle multiple agencies, and crimes that play out against beaches, gated communities, and sweltering streets. They’re tightly connected to Elle Gray’s wider FBI universe, with nods to Blake Wilder and others.

If you like locked-island mysteries, sun-soaked settings hiding dark undercurrents, and a rookie agent trying to survive her trial by fire, start with The Florida Girl and follow Alexa from there.
