Author bio
Flint Maxwell was born in Akron and grew up in Northeast Ohio. He still lives in Northeast Ohio today with his wife, kids, and their pets, and that rooted, local feeling shows up all through his fiction.
He mostly writes horror, but he clearly likes testing the edges of that label. Some books go straight for monsters and the end of the world. Others lean into dark fantasy, adventure, or a little comedy mixed with the scares. Across the catalog, he keeps returning to ordinary people who suddenly have to deal with something far outside the ordinary.
Ohio sticks to the page.
A lot of Maxwell's stories begin with recognizable lives and places before everything goes wrong. In The Snow and the rest of the Whiteout sequence, a summer getaway at Prism Lake becomes a frozen supernatural apocalypse. In Dead Haven, zombie writer Jack Jupiter returns home for his mother's funeral and finds the dead refusing to stay buried. Maxwell likes that kind of turn, one bad day, then a worse one.
He also likes mixing tones.
The Jack Zombie books are gory and fast, but they also make room for loyalty, travel, grief, and the strange humor that shows up when people are terrified and exhausted. Fright Squad pushes further into comedy, following Abraham Crowley and his friends through monster-hunting disasters, secret organizations, and a parade of increasingly odd creatures. Even when the books get funny, the danger is still real.
There is range here. Knight and Shadow shifts into dark fantasy with gun knights, exile, and old evil rising again. The Midwest Magic Chronicles, written with Martha Carr, begin with Maria Apple discovering that the Midwest hides witches, ghosts, and a link to Oriceran. Newer horror like The Cabin of Nowhere: Dandelion, Creature, The Thirst, and The Caretaker shows the same interest in everyday lives getting cracked open by something ancient, hungry, or just plain wrong.
Again and again, Maxwell comes back to survival, friendship, loss, and the moment when a person has to keep moving before they have any idea how bad things really are. His leads are usually not experts with a master plan. They are people improvising under pressure. That gives the books a grounded, scrappy energy even when the setups are wild.
Readers who stick with Maxwell usually seem to come for momentum. His books move. He tends to work with tight groups, escalating threats, hidden creatures, and people who do not get much time to process what is happening before they have to act. There is often a strong sense of place too, from snowed-in roads and small towns to cabins, camps, and half-ruined landscapes.
He is still based in Northeast Ohio, and his official bio keeps the picture simple: family, kids, pets, and a steady run of horror stories with room for the occasional genre detour. That feels like a fair summary of the work too. Grounded on the surface, restless underneath.
