Series background & context

Flesh and Blood is Mitchell's East London family saga, built around the Miller family and Essex Lane Estate. The estate is known as The Devil, which tells you plenty before the first crime has even happened. It is a place where people dream of getting out, but money, violence, pride, and family ties keep pulling them back.

The series does not move in a straight, tidy line.

Blood Sister begins with sisters Jen and Tiff Miller during the years from the 1990s into the early 2000s. Jen wants something better than estate life. Tiff is more restless, more reckless, and more willing to run errands for dangerous people. Dee, another key figure, brings her own secrets and agenda into the mix. The result is a story where sisterhood is real, but it is never simple.

Blood Mother steps back to the 1970s and fills in Babs Miller's story. Babs is young, pregnant, and vulnerable when Stan Miller enters her life as a possible answer to her problems. He is not that. The book shows how a family can be shaped by decisions made decades earlier, especially when love, fear, and criminal business all get tangled together.

By Blood Daughter, the older and younger generations are locked into the consequences. Babs has money to share, Jen wants security for her children, Tiff is in debt to dangerous men, and Dee is worried about old criminal habits returning. Blood Secrets keeps the pressure on when stolen gold disappears and Babs and Pearl begin to suspect each other.

The books are gritty, but the real engine is family. Mitchell writes about mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and rivals who know one another too well. A favour can become a threat. A secret can become currency. A home can feel like a trap.

One False Move is a short, sharp companion story set around The Devil's Estate, following Hayley as she tries to survive one dangerous day after prison. For the main arc, start with Blood Sister, then read Blood Mother, Blood Daughter, and Blood Secrets.
