First Salik War Books in Order

The First Salik War series sits in the same universe as Theirs Not to Reason Why, but it works well on its own because it goes backward to an earlier crisis. This is the point where humanity first has to reckon with the Salik on a large scale, and with what it means to fight beside people who are not human at all. The series has more diplomacy in it than a lot of military science fiction, which is part of its appeal.

At the center is Jacaranda MacKenzie, usually called Jackie. She comes from a political family, has psychic abilities, has served in the military, and would honestly prefer a quieter life as a translator. She does not get that life. The books keep putting her in the exact space where politics, strategy, and survival overlap, which makes her a strong lead for readers who like competence without swagger.

Jackie is both politician and soldier, and the series gets real mileage out of that combination.

The Terrans begins with the approach of disaster and the first steps toward alliance. The V'Dan expands the viewpoint through the V'Dan empire and the growing relationship between Jackie and Prince Li'eth. The Blockade takes the war to a harder place, where even allies who need each other may not like or trust each other much. Johnson keeps asking the same hard question in different forms: how do you fight a brutal enemy without becoming brutal yourself.

The setting matters as much as the plot. Human worlds, alien courts, embassy spaces, and war zones all feel different, and those differences shape what characters can say or do. The V'Dan are not just humans in different costumes, and the Salik are not just faceless monsters. Their cultures and methods affect every military decision. So does precognition, which adds another layer of pressure without turning the books into easy wish fulfillment.

If you like space opera that cares about language, treaties, command structure, and the ethics of survival, this is where Johnson really leans in. The battles matter, but the series gets its staying power from the arguments around those battles, and from Jackie trying to hold several futures in her head at once.
