Series background & context

The Firebug series follows Ava, a young woman with a rare and dangerous gift. She can start fires with her mind, a power that should make her feel strong. Instead, it has tied her to the Coterie, a magical mafia that uses her as an enforcer.

Ava wants a life that belongs to her. The Coterie has other ideas.

At the start of the main story in Firebug, Ava is working under Venus, the ruthless leader who holds the contract over her head. When Ava is ordered to kill someone she cares about, she refuses, knowing full well that defying the Coterie could put her, her guardian Cade, and the people closest to her in danger. She goes on the run with Lock and Ezra, her friends and teammates, while trying to find a way out that does not leave everyone else paying for her choice.

The series is urban fantasy with the shape of a crime story. The magical world includes vampires, shifters, dryads, were-creatures, and other strange beings, but the pressure comes from control, debts, threats, and the question of whether Ava can ever be free. Her fire is useful in a fight, though it also makes it difficult for her to disappear or pretend that nothing is wrong.

Lock and Ezra matter as much as the magic. Lock is steady when Ava is ready to run straight into trouble, while Ezra brings a more chaotic energy to the team. Their friendship gives the books much of their warmth. Ava can be sarcastic and guarded, but her care for her chosen family is never in doubt.

The short prequel Burnt Sugar sends Ava, Lock, and Ezra on an eerie assignment involving a gingerbread house. It offers a quick look at their working dynamic before the first novel. Pyromantic continues Ava's story after the events of Firebug, as new threats emerge and she has to face both the Coterie's demands and the complications inside her own circle.

Expect brisk action, dark humor, and a heroine who is tired of being used as someone else's weapon. The books deal with violence and frightening situations, but they also make space for jokes, loyalty, awkward romance, and the small acts of care that help people keep going.
