Fire Power, Volume 2
by Robert Kirkman
2021
Owen Johnson wants to raise his family rather than fulfill the destiny associated with his ability to throw fireballs. When the past returns to threaten that ordinary life, protecting those he loves becomes inseparable from the role he tried to leave behind.
Series background & context
Fire Power follows Owen Johnson, a man whose search for his origins draws him into a martial arts tradition with consequences he cannot simply leave behind. Created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Chris Samnee, the series combines supernatural fighting with family drama. Its central question is practical as well as fantastic: what happens when a person chosen for an enormous responsibility wants a quiet life instead?
The story begins with Owen traveling to China to learn about his birth parents. His journey brings him to a mysterious Shaolin temple, where students are trying to recover the lost ability to throw fireballs. They believe this power will be needed to save the world. That opening gives the training a purpose beyond becoming a better fighter, while Owen arrives with personal questions that do not automatically match the temple's expectations of him.
Being told he might save the world is not the same as wanting the job.
The family side of the story becomes especially important as the series moves forward. Owen has turned away from the life attached to his unusual ability and wants to raise his family in peace. The past refuses to stay at a safe distance, however, and people and dangers connected to it threaten the home he values. That conflict links the martial arts adventure to an understandable concern: protecting loved ones without allowing every part of life to become a fight. Power creates obligations that Owen cannot resolve merely by being stronger than an opponent.
The setting changes the kind of pressure Owen faces. The temple places him within a community shaped by training, inherited knowledge and expectations about a coming threat. His family life gives those larger ideas a smaller, more immediate measure. A danger matters because of what it could do to the people around him, rather than simply because someone says the world is at risk. The series makes space for both the physical excitement of supernatural combat and the tension of a past returning at an inconvenient time.
Fire Power, Volume 1 introduces the journey and training that explain Owen's connection to the power. Fire Power, Volume 2 carries that background into the struggle over the life he wants to lead afterward. Reading them in that order helps the shift from discovery to family responsibility make sense. The tone is an action adventure with humor and domestic concerns alongside its supernatural stakes. Readers who enjoy martial arts stories get the mystery of a lost technique, while readers drawn to character conflicts have Owen's divided loyalties to follow through the larger fight.
