Finn/Anna Resnikov is a modern espionage sequence set in the Russia that emerged after the Soviet collapse. Characters such as Burt Miller and his giant private firm Cougar push the series into more contemporary territory, where state power and corporate power blur together. That gives the books a modern edge without losing the slower, human tension that makes the first novel work.

The books can be bleak, and the stakes are often large, but they stay readable because the focus keeps returning to people under pressure.
