Series background & context

The Farm to Table Mysteries follow Shiloh Bellamy, a woman who walks away from a television career to rescue her family’s failing Michigan farm and discovers that the soil is not the only thing hiding buried trouble.

Shiloh comes back to Cherry Glen after fifteen years in Los Angeles, where she worked behind the scenes in television. Grief over her fiancé’s death and worry over her father’s health push her to cash out her savings, sell her condo, and pour everything into Bellamy Farm. Her dream is to turn the property into a sustainable, organic operation with a farm to table café, the kind of place that could anchor the town’s growing tourist trade.

In Farm to Trouble, reality hits hard. Shiloh arrives to find her father suspicious of her plans and the farm deep in debt. To keep the business afloat she signs a deal with Jefferson Crocker, an investor who is far from beloved in Cherry Glen. When Crocker is found shot at the farmers’ market and Shiloh and her father become prime suspects, she has to split her energy between planting crops and uncovering who really wanted him dead.

Subsequent books continue to mix everyday farm work with murder investigations. Put Out to Pasture brings an autumn festival to the Bellamy property and a body discovered near a scarecrow, with Shiloh’s lifelong best friend suddenly under suspicion. In Farm’s Way sees long simmering family tensions, questions over old inheritances, and a new death that could derail everything Shiloh has accomplished. In Crime and Cherry Pits, Shiloh finally secures a coveted booth at a major cherry festival, only to watch a respected drama professor collapse during a pit spitting contest and find herself once more in the center of a small town scandal. Later installments tackle cold cases tied to her grandmother’s past and secrets literally unearthed from the farm’s own ground.

Shiloh’s companions include her stubborn father, a cousin who does not always share her vision for the farm, and Huckleberry, the small pug who manages to get into almost as much trouble as his owner. A local sheriff provides both a skeptical sounding board and the potential for something more than friendship. Along the way, readers get a lot of farm atmosphere: early mornings, weather worries, and the satisfaction of watching someone try to rebuild a family legacy.

These mysteries will particularly appeal to readers who like contemporary rural settings, complicated but loving family relationships, and a heroine who is as likely to be hauling feed as she is to be chasing down clues.
