Blackhawk
by Jay Allan
2016
Long before the main Far Stars saga, Arkarin Blackhawk is a wandering fighter with nowhere to belong. On war-torn Celtiboria, meeting Augustin Lucerne forces him to choose a side.
Series background & context
Far Stars Legends is the prequel side of Jay Allan's Far Stars universe, and it begins with Blackhawk. That makes it smaller than some of his other lines, but not lighter. The whole point is to go back and see who Arkarin Blackhawk was before the main trilogy turned him into the wary, scarred fighter readers already know.
The setting is still the Far Stars, the rough frontier beyond the Void where imperial power thins out and local rulers do the rest. But this book narrows the focus to Celtiboria, a world wrecked by long civil war. That matters because Celtiboria is not just another stop on the map. It is a place where Blackhawk has to decide whether he is going to keep drifting or finally bind himself to something.
That something is Augustin Lucerne.
Lucerne is one of the rare honorable leaders in this part of Allan's universe, and his struggle against the other warlords gives the story its shape. Blackhawk arrives as a wanderer with a violent past and plenty of reasons not to trust anyone. The fun of the book is watching him decide, piece by piece, whether he is capable of standing for anything beyond survival.
So while there is still fighting, strategy, and frontier danger, this entry is more character-rooted than some of Allan's bigger war sagas. It is about origin, allegiance, and the cost of carrying old damage into a new life.
If you are curious about Blackhawk but do not want to jump straight into the main Far Stars books, this is an easy way in. And if you already know the later series, it fills in a lot of emotional ground under the choices Blackhawk makes there.
