Gilded Ashes stays in the same world but shifts to Cinderella. Maia is an orphan living under the shadow of a deadly bargain made by her mother, and that one twist changes the whole emotional texture of the story. Instead of a bright wish fulfillment fantasy, the novella becomes tense and claustrophobic. Love is dangerous, happiness has to be performed, and even a ball can feel like a trap. It is short, but it fits neatly beside Cruel Beauty.

These books may borrow fairy tale shapes, but they are far more interested in curses, power, and choice than in neat happily ever afters.

Crimson Bound moves to a different world altogether, drawing on Little Red Riding Hood and court fantasy. Rachelle strays from the safe path, makes a terrible bargain, and then spends years trying to atone while fighting the darkness that has marked her. Much of the book plays out between forest menace and palace intrigue, with Rachelle forced into an uneasy alliance with Armand, the king's son. It has the same Hodge interests as the earlier books, including desire, duty, and dangerous magic, but the mood is cooler and the politics sharper.

Taken together, this shelf gives you a good sense of what Hodge does best. She writes tense retellings where old myths still feel dangerous, love is never simple, and the central girls have real teeth. You can read Cruel Beauty and Crimson Bound as standalones, while Gilded Ashes works best as a companion to Cruel Beauty. If you want fairy tales with more bite than comfort, this is the corner of her work to start with.
