Series background & context

Fairplay Shifters is where Serena Meadows's published series work begins, and it still shows many of the things she likes best. Family bonds, supernatural rules, forbidden attraction, and a steady rise in danger all shape these books.

Set around the Colorado town of Fairplay, the series brings together mountain lion shifters and witches who are not supposed to mix. Justin opens the door, and the books that follow, Jake, Quinten, Steven, Dalton, and Daniel, keep building on the same web of family loyalty, magical politics, and romantic fallout. This is one of her more connected series, so it works best in order.

The taboo is part of the fun.

What starts as individual love stories gradually becomes a bigger conflict involving councils, black magic, old grudges, and the fight to protect both loved ones and home. Because the characters are so tied to one another, every romance has ripple effects. Brothers, sisters, witches, parents, and enemies all keep crossing paths, which gives the whole series a family saga feel rather than a simple one-couple-at-a-time setup.

If you want to start with Meadows's earlier voice and see the foundation for a lot of her later work, Fairplay Shifters is a smart place to go. It has romance, magic, and danger, but also a real sense of the same people growing together through one long supernatural mess.
