F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad Investigation Books in Order

At the center of this series is Beatrice Alexander, an elementary schoolteacher who has spent most of her life treating her telekinetic abilities like a problem to hide. That changes in Mind Over Monsters, when Bea is pulled into a secret government unit and learns that the world is a lot stranger, and a lot deadlier, than she thought.

The squad's name tells you exactly what kind of job this is. F.R.E.A.K.S. stands for Federal Response to Extra Sensory and Kindred Supernaturals, a top secret team that answers the cases ordinary law enforcement cannot touch. Zombies, vampires, ghosts, trolls, rogue psychics, and the occasional situation that gets out of hand in record time all fall under its umbrella. Bea enters that world as the new recruit, still learning how to control her powers, swing a machete, and survive office politics in a house full of monsters and monster hunters.

This is not a polished superhero outfit.

A big part of the fun is the team itself. Bea works alongside a werewolf, a vampire, psychics, and other gifted agents, and the books never forget that forced proximity can be just as dangerous as the mission. Her bond with werewolf agent Will Price and her uneasy chemistry with vampire Oliver Montrose give the series a steady romantic pull, while Nancy Lake and the rest of the squad add humor, friction, and found family energy.

The stories move like paranormal case files with a personal streak. To Catch A Vampire sends Bea undercover into Dallas vampire society. Death Takes a Holiday drags her home for Christmas and drops her into more trouble. High Moon pits love and loyalty against a brutal werewolf case, and The Sin Eater shows what happens when trauma, exile, and vampire politics finally catch up with her. The short story Nancy Lake and the Case of the First Date adds a lighter side trip inside the same world.

What ties the series together is Bea's growth. She starts out scared of what she can do and unsure where she belongs. By the later books, the danger is bigger, but so are the emotional stakes. Jennifer Harlow mixes urban fantasy, paranormal mystery, romance, and dark humor, so you get monster fights and banter in one scene, then grief, jealousy, or hard choices in the next. If you like ensemble casts, sharp dialogue, and heroines who have to earn every bit of confidence they find, this series has a lot to offer.
