The Expert Dungeons & Dragons line usually means the world just got bigger. Characters are tougher, travel matters more, and adventures can reach beyond one dungeon into towns, wilderness routes, and regional politics. Douglas Niles's Curse of Xanathon shows that shift clearly.

At the center of Curse of Xanathon is a mystery. A ruler begins issuing bizarre decrees, and the surrounding society starts to wobble under the strain. That already feels more complicated than a simple monster-clearing mission, and that is part of the Expert appeal. The players are not only fighting. They are investigating, traveling, and trying to understand why a place that should work is falling into disorder.

The line often sits in a sweet spot for old-school fantasy gaming. It is larger than the introductory Basic adventures, but it has not yet drifted into the sheer scale of the high-level modules. There is room for politics, curses, and strange local problems without losing the feeling that a small band of adventurers can still change the outcome through nerve and good decisions.

Niles handles that style well. He likes systems under pressure, and an Expert adventure can make good use of that instinct.
