Exiled is a shared-world project, and the S.M. Stirling corner of it works best if you enjoy the mix of a very strange premise with very practical conflict. The setting imagines a world where the extinction asteroid never wiped out the dinosaurs. Over deep time, intelligent reptilian and mammalian peoples evolve instead of humans, and by the Bronze Age they are competing for land, security, and dominance just as fiercely as any human empire would.

That gives the series its surface appeal, claws, scales, bronze weapons, harsh landscapes, and nonhuman cultures with recognizably human motives. But the stronger hook is what those cultures want. The Mrem are clan-based, hot-blooded, and often cast in feline terms. Their great enemies are the Liskash, a reptilian imperial power that runs on hierarchy, conquest, and slavery. The conflict is not decorative. It is the spine of the world.

Stirling's contribution sits comfortably in that frame.

With By Tooth and Claw, the focus narrows from large civilizational struggle to something closer and meaner. Survival, hunger, sickness, capture, and the needs of one threatened group drive the story. That smaller scale is useful. It shows that the Exiled world is not only about grand wars between species. It is also about how ordinary people, or ordinary Mrem, endure when the great conflict crashes down into daily life.

The tone is adventurous, but not soft. Travel hurts. Shortages matter. A mistake can get someone killed or enslaved. Even so, the series has the old-fashioned momentum of a good adventure shelf. Characters do not spend much time wondering whether the world is dangerous. They are too busy moving through it.
