Eve Calder Books in Order

Eve Calder is a Florida native whose mysteries make room for two familiar pleasures: a good puzzle and a cookie near the water. She grew up in the suburbs, in a family where reading was part of everyday life. Her parents read to the children, and her father could invent bedtime stories on the spot.

That kind of childhood made storytelling feel less like a distant job and more like play.

Calder has said she was making up stories from the time she could hold a crayon. Books were always around, and the habit stuck. Her path was not especially tidy, though. She graduated from college without graduating from high school, was expelled from music school for lacking musical talent, and once landed a plane, a story she has left mostly unexplained.

Her first published novel, And Then There Were Crumbs, arrived in 2019 and introduced pastry chef Kate McGuire. After a rough stretch in Manhattan, Kate heads to the Florida island town of Coral Cay and finds work at the Cookie House bakery. A murder soon gives her a reason to look beyond the mixing bowls and learn the rhythms, secrets, and loyalties of her new community.

Then the cookies start sharing space with clues.

The next books, Sugar and Vice and A Tale of Two Cookies, keep Kate in Coral Cay, where a pirate festival, a discovered skeleton, a sudden wedding, and a missing groom all bring fresh trouble to town. The mysteries have food at their center, but the series is also about friendship and the slow work of making a home after plans have fallen apart.

Calder has described the Cookie House books as a way to combine three things she loves: mysteries, beach towns, and cookies. The setting gives her plenty to work with. Coral Cay is a close-knit place with visitors passing through, locals who know one another’s business, and enough shared history to make every new question feel personal. Kate’s best friend Maxi and the town dog, Oliver, are part of the familiar circle around her.

For Calder, cozy mysteries are built around the puzzle. The interest is in who did it, how, and why, without leaning on graphic violence. That approach lets the books balance danger with humor, baking, community events, and the ordinary pressures of work, family, and relationships.

Outside the page, Calder has said she reads widely, from biographies and history to mysteries and thrillers. She also enjoys baking, growing vegetables and flowers, running, biking, and taking long walks with a notebook close at hand.
