Series background & context

The Evan series is a two book arc about Evan Nash, an ordinary high school student whose life is upended after a near fatal accident. What begins as a medical mystery soon turns into something stranger, as his terrifying visions prove to be tied to real people in real danger.

In Through the Fog Evan is hit while riding his bike and suffers a head injury that leaves him with vivid, harrowing episodes whenever he falls asleep. Desperate for help, he ends up in the office of psychiatrist Shannon Mayer, who is carrying her own trauma after the kidnapping of her young daughter. At first Shannon looks for psychological explanations, but the more Evan describes what he sees, the more it sounds like dreams are bleeding into reality.

As the two of them compare Evan's visions with the details of the unsolved case, a terrible possibility emerges. The images that are wrecking his health might also be a map to a missing child. Using them means pushing Evan's already fragile body to the limit and inviting the attention of people who will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried.

The Unexpected Hero picks up the story after those events. Evan understands his ability a little better and knows how much it can cost him, yet he is still pulled toward situations where people need help. His intense sense of right and wrong will not let him look away, even when using his gift brings on life threatening symptoms and draws in dangerous new enemies.

Shannon remains a steady presence, trying to balance her duty of care with the knowledge that Evan may be the only one who can prevent more tragedies. Family members, law enforcement officers, and other patients move through the books, creating a web of relationships that makes each choice feel personal rather than abstract.

Throughout the series the tone stays grounded. The paranormal element is there, but it is treated as something that sits uncomfortably alongside hospital exams, therapy sessions, and everyday life. Readers who like character driven stories about people wrestling with unwanted abilities, and who enjoy a mix of mystery and emotion, will find a lot to hold onto in Evan's journey.
