Much Ado About You

by Eloisa James

2004

Series background & context

The Essex Sisters books are four full‑length novels plus extra novellas that follow four orphaned Scottish sisters as they conquer English society on their own terms. Left with only a horse each for dowries, they are shipped to London to become wards of the Duke of Holbrook, a well‑meaning but somewhat disheveled guardian.

The first novel, Much Ado About You, centers on Tess, the eldest sister. Practical and determined, she takes charge of the household while trying to secure decent matches for herself and her sisters. Torn between a sensible suitor and the quiet, wounded man who truly understands her, Tess has to decide whether she will marry for stability or for love in a world where her father’s gambling has already left them unprotected.

In Kiss Me, Annabel, the focus shifts to the second sister. Annabel has promised herself that she will marry for money; years of watching their father risk everything has left her hungry for security. Instead, she finds herself in a carriage bound for Scotland with a cash‑poor earl and a false reputation as his wife. A disastrous journey, a “kissing” wager, and a fake marriage that starts to feel real force both of them to reconsider what they truly need.

The Taming of the Duke belongs to Imogen, the volatile widowed sister whose grief and anger have made her a scandal. Under the disapproving eye of their guardian Rafe, Duke of Holbrook, she decides that taking a lover is the only way to reclaim her life. Complications arrive in the form of Rafe’s illegitimate half brother, a masquerade, and Rafe’s own slow surrender to sobriety and desire.

Finally, Pleasure for Pleasure gives the stage to Josie, the youngest and curviest sister, who is cruelly nicknamed “the Scottish Sausage” by fashionable London. Determined not to vanish into the wallpaper, she strikes a bargain with the rakish Earl of Mayne to teach her how to flirt. What begins as a slightly scandalous tutorial becomes a story about learning to inhabit your own body unapologetically.

Linked novellas, a detailed companion guide, and later stories like A Gentleman Never Tells and the pieces collected in Midsummer Delights return to the Essex world, offering glimpses of the sisters’ married lives and new romances among their friends. Together, the books offer a blend of humor, family chaos, and sharp observations about how women navigate a marriage market stacked against them.
