ER Yatscoff Books in Order

E.R. Yatscoff was born in Welland, Ontario, and spent his childhood and teen years there in a blue-collar canal town that later fed directly into his fiction. He has said he lived in Welland from 1954 to 1975, and that place clearly stayed with him.

It gave him streets, voices, and kinds of trouble he would return to years later.

Before writing became a steady part of life, Yatscoff did a lot of living. He spent time in Australia, backpacked around the world, and met his wife, Gloria, on a rusted freighter in the South China Sea. They eventually settled in Alberta, raised three children, and built a life far from the canal bridges and neighborhoods of his Ontario years.

He also built a long career in emergency services. After 32 years with Edmonton Fire Rescue, he retired as a station captain. That experience became the backbone of his adult crime fiction, and it helps explain why his firefighting scenes feel less like borrowed research and more like somebody remembering the job from the inside.

Writing came later. He has said the spark was simple: he read a poor book to his young son and thought he could do better. He started by telling stories for his children, kept working at it for years, and credits a small writers group for helping sharpen the work.

That mix of late start and stubborn practice feels important.

In one lane of his bibliography are the firefighter thrillers. Old Flames brings in fire captain Gerry Ormond, old guilt, and arson. Gerry's War pushes that world into corruption and organized crime. Then Final Response changes the setup completely, trapping a firefighting crew in an evacuated northern city battered by cold, gang violence, and the constant threat of fire. Readers who like procedural detail usually find plenty to hold onto there.

He writes younger protagonists differently from a lot of middle grade and YA authors. In The Far Bank, Archie's Gold, and Ransom, the danger comes from bullies, gangs, dares, working-class streets, and the uneasy politics of being a kid among adults, not from magic or dystopian systems. Even when the books are written for younger readers, they tend to keep one foot in the real world, with all its rough edges.

Travel and family history widen the map. The Rumrunner's Boy draws on stories about his rumrunning grandfather and turns Prohibition on Lake Erie into a tense coming-of-age crime story. Teeth of the Cocodrilo heads to the Mayan Riviera for a hotter, more chaotic thriller. Across those books, and across much of his work, the recurring concerns are loyalty, courage under pressure, revenge, and what happens when ordinary people step into something bigger than they expected.

Yatscoff has picked up recognition along the way, including a Canada Book Award win for Final Response and an Arthur Ellis finalist spot for The Rumrunner's Boy. He has also won for short nonfiction. These days he lives in Alberta, writes and edits regularly, keeps close to his writers group, and still sounds like a person who enjoys stories with motion, grit, and people under strain.
