Series background & context

Entwined Tales is a collaborative set of connected fairy-tale novellas written by several authors. The stories share a single world and follow the children of a kind woodcutter whose family receives an unusual reward from the Fairy Council: a fairy godfather named Mortimer.

Mortimer is not exactly the helpful sort.

He is sarcastic, unreliable, and prone to making a situation more complicated while trying to fix it. As the woodcutter's seven children grow up, they each head into a different fairy-tale-shaped adventure. The larger thread is family. Brothers and sisters appear across the stories, carry news from one kingdom to another, and deal with the ripple effects of Mortimer's questionable guidance.

KM Shea's contribution, A Goose Girl, opens the series. It follows Corynn, known as Rynn, the oldest of the woodcutter's children. She works as a royal lady's maid and expects a straightforward journey escorting a princess to a neighboring kingdom. Instead, the princess disappears, leaving Rynn to take her place and face a dangerous political mess.

Rynn must keep a secret, manage a difficult fairy horse, and deal with Conrad, an observant lord who notices more than is convenient. War is approaching, and the false identity that once seemed like a temporary solution could become a death sentence if the truth comes out.

The novella uses the Goose Girl setup but gives it a different point of view. Rather than centering the traditional princess, it follows the woman left to clean up the royal disaster. That makes the story a quick, lively read with court tension, a slow-blooming romantic thread, and a heroine who has to rely on her wits.

Entwined Tales is designed for readers who enjoy fairy-tale retellings in bite-sized form. Each installment has its own couple and story, while the shared family and Mortimer's meddling give the collection a friendly, connected feel.
