Empowered Books in Order

Empowered is the outlier in Kaylea Cross's bibliography, and that is part of the fun. Instead of military teams or federal agents, this series moves into paranormal romance, with ancient powers, prophecy, and a hidden magical race at the center of the story.

The first book, Darkest Caress, introduces the Empowered, a dwindling supernatural people facing a coming war. Daegan Blackwell is one of the last of his kind, and Olivia Farrell is pulled into that world before she fully understands what is happening to her. Their story brings together a destined-mates romance, an awakening to buried power, and an external battle between good and evil.

Even though the setup is more fantastical than Cross's suspense series, some of her familiar strengths are still there. Olivia is not written as a passive heroine. She is frightened, confused, and very much out of her depth at first, but the book is interested in what she becomes once the truth is impossible to ignore. Daegan may be ancient and powerful, but the emotional engine is still about trust, danger, and whether two people can face what is coming together.

The tone is darker and moodier than Cross's contemporary work. There is more myth, more fate, and more overtly supernatural conflict. The magic element matters, but so does the romance, and Cross keeps the story moving with the same straightforward pace she brings to her suspense novels.

If you mostly know her for military romantic suspense, Empowered is an interesting detour. It keeps the intensity and the protective dynamic, but filters them through prophecy, power, and a magical world hiding in plain sight.
