Author bio
Elleby Harper was born in England and raised in Australia. She has also lived in North America, an experience that shows up in the way her stories move between British settings, American characters, and international stakes.
She wanted to write from an early age, but her route to publishing wasn't a straight line. Before turning to fiction, Harper worked a wide range of jobs, including medical receptionist, casino croupier, exhibition curator, librarian, and journalist. That is a lot of different worlds to pass through.
Those jobs give her crime novels a useful sense of people at work, under pressure, and trying to keep a secret. Her books tend to put ordinary routines beside urgent situations: a police investigation, a family crisis, a witness who is suddenly in danger, or a lead that refuses to stay buried.
Her first published crime novel, Driven to Death, introduced Detective Bex Wynter in 2017. Bex is an American detective rebuilding her life in London while working with the Metropolitan Police's Youth Crimes Team. The series mixes procedural cases with the personal history Bex cannot quite leave behind.
The Bex books became the center of Harper's crime fiction. Stolen Daughters follows the disappearance of a busload of schoolgirls, while Courting Death turns to a cold case during the Christmas season. In Blood Line, Bex is pulled into a case shaped by family loyalty and a powerful criminal father. Later, Bury the Past begins with a stolen baby and asks how much a family can really know about its own past.
Harper also likes changing the scale of the danger.
The Bram Carver novels spin off from the Bex Wynter books and follow Bex's long-missing brother in covert, action-driven missions. Second Chance starts that branch of the story, followed by Hunt for Justice. The Scout Ledger books move to the United States, where a former immigration officer is unwilling to walk away when she sees people being exploited or threatened. One Way Out and Dead Witness are leaner, more direct thrillers built around that instinct to step in.
Then there is The Undertaker's Daughter, a sharp change of scene. Set in an alternative Victorian London, it follows an apprentice undertaker facing a murderous ghost, a rogue ghost hunter, and supernatural trouble that could spread through the city. Harper's later standalone, Girl in the Dark, returns to modern suspense, with a politically connected family, old photographs, and a small town holding tight to its secrets.
Across these books, the recurring thread is justice. Harper's protagonists are often outsiders, newcomers, witnesses, or people carrying old grief. They make mistakes, push too hard, and keep going anyway.
For readers who like crime stories with a strong central investigator, fast-moving cases, and personal stakes that carry from one book to the next, Harper offers several clear ways in. Start with Bex for London police work, Bram for covert action, Scout for American vigilante-style suspense, or Virginia Grimm for a compact historical ghost mystery.
