Author bio
Elizabeth Harris was born in Cambridge and grew up in Kent, a landscape that has stayed close to her work. Country lanes, woods, old buildings and the pressure of the past all turn up in her novels, whether she is writing contemporary time-slip fiction under her own name or historical mysteries as Alys Clare.
She studied English and Psychology at Keele University, then earned a Certificate in Archaeology from the University of Kent. That mix makes sense when you look at the books. Harris is interested in people, but she is also drawn to what remains after them: a grave, a ruin, a diary, an old road, a place with a story nobody has quite finished telling.
Her first published novel was The Herb Gatherers in 1991. It began a run of standalones including The Egyptian Years, The Sun Worshippers, Time of the Wolf, The Quiet Earth, The Sacrifice Stone and The Twilight Child. These books often bring a present-day character face to face with an older life or buried event. History is never safely distant in them.
A lost diary can become a problem in the present.
The early novels move between places and eras, from Egypt under British rule to Roman Arles, wartime Sussex and the Fens of East Anglia. They mix romance, family tension, archaeology and a light touch of the uncanny. Harris tends to focus on people who feel stuck, lonely or underestimated, then gives them a mystery from the past that forces them to make a choice about their own future.
She also wrote the three-book Wilderness sequence, beginning with A Good Man's Love. These are family and relationship novels that follow characters through grief, friendship, betrayal and the pull of distant places. Singing in the Wilderness and A Slight Folly continue the story of Hal, Jo and the people whose lives become tied to theirs over many years.
Then came a new name and a new long-running chapter.
Since 1999, Harris has written as Alys Clare. The Hawkenlye Mysteries, set in medieval Kent, follow Abbess Helewise and Sir Josse d'Acquin as they investigate deaths and secrets around Hawkenlye Abbey. The Aelf Fen books move to post-Conquest East Anglia, where the young healer Lassair works through cases shaped by folklore, divided loyalties and the treacherous waterways of the fens.
Her later series keep changing the historical frame. The Gabriel Taverner Mysteries take place in early seventeenth-century Devon and center on a former ship's surgeon turned country physician. The World's End Bureau books head to Victorian London, pairing private investigators Lily Raynor and Felix Wilbraham. Across all of them, Harris likes practical people who notice what others miss, and settings that feel useful, beautiful and a little dangerous.
She has lived in Kent for much of her life, while also spending time on the Isle of Wight and in Brittany. That connection to real landscapes shows. Her books are full of places where the ground seems to remember, and where looking closely at the past is often the only way to survive the present.
