Author bio
Elizabeth Bailey was born in the United Kingdom and spent much of her childhood in colonial Africa, in what was then Nyasaland and is now Malawi. Books, heat and wide open spaces helped shape her early sense of drama.
Her parents were unconventional and encouraged reading and performance as much as schoolwork. Touring companies came through, school plays were mounted, and she discovered Georgette Heyer while still at school, a writer whose elegant Regency worlds would echo through her own fiction.
As a young woman Bailey moved back to England to train at drama school. She spent years on stage, taking whatever acting work she could find, learning how people sounded, moved and argued. That training in dialogue and timing later slipped naturally into her stories.
When the constant hustle of acting began to pall, she shifted into teaching, running drama at a secondary school and directing large productions with casts of dozens of teenagers. At the same time she wrote for herself, filling notebooks with poems, half finished tales and ideas for historical romances.
In her thirties she sat down to tackle a full length novel set in the Georgian and Regency world she loved to read about. One book became several. After an apprenticeship that lasted eight years and eight manuscripts, she finally sold to Mills and Boon, launching a run of traditional romances with sharp wit, careful period detail and heroines who rarely fit the roles laid out for them.
Over time Bailey broadened her range. Fly the Wild Echoes and For One More Tomorrow mix contemporary life with the uncanny, weaving time slip and ghostly elements into the lives of modern women. A suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger, pushes further into psychological danger without losing her interest in character and relationship.
Later she turned to crime. In the late eighteenth century mysteries of the Lady Fan series, beginning with The Gilded Shroud, Bailey gives Ottilia Draycott, later Lady Ottilia Fanshawe, a sharp mind and a stubborn sense of justice. Working alongside her husband Francis, Ottilia investigates stranglings in London town houses, village witch panics, river attacks, theatrical deaths and bodies left on her own doorstep, all while pushing against the limits placed on a woman of her class.
Romance never vanished from the work. The Brides by Chance sequence and the Governesses Trilogy follow orphans, poor relations and working women as they navigate tight finances, rigid etiquette and the chance of love. Again and again Bailey returns to young people who must make their own way in the world and learn to trust both themselves and each other.
Bailey lives in Sussex, still close to the theatre. For years she produced school shows and helps run a local arts festival, as well as offering critique services and an editing guide for fellow writers, What's Wrong with your Novel? And How to Fix it. Whether she is writing a country house murder, a governess romance or a modern ghost story, her work tends to share a few constants: clear storytelling, quietly determined heroines and an eye for the small social moments that can change a life.
