Series background & context

Elixir is a much smaller corner of Nina Levine's catalog, and it reads more like a complete standalone world than a long-running series. If you want one contemporary romance without club politics or billionaire family chaos, this is the one.

Steal My Breath centers on Callie St James, who is funny, frustrated, broke, and more than a little over bad dating experiences. She wants love, wants sex, wants her writing career to move, and is trying to make ordinary life work. Then Luke Hardy, the man she's been quietly wanting for ages, finally steps into the story for real.

What starts as attraction gets complicated fast. Luke is moody, secretive, and clearly carrying more than he says. Callie, meanwhile, lands a new job at a local paper and uncovers information about Luke's family that puts her morals in direct conflict with her feelings. That gives the book its real tension. It is not just about whether these two want each other. It is about what loving someone costs when truth starts pulling at the seams.

This book leans contemporary rather than high concept. The stakes are personal. Work, ambition, desire, reputation, and trust all matter. Callie has a bright, chatty voice, so even when the story turns more serious, it keeps a lively, modern feel. Luke brings the broody energy. Callie refuses to make life easy for him.

Think of Elixir as a compact hit of Nina Levine's style. You still get a strong alpha hero, a heroine with plenty to say, real emotional conflict, and a lot of chemistry. You just get it in a one-book package. If that sounds good, Steal My Breath is an easy place to jump in.
