Author bio

Elissa Strati did not come to fiction straight out of school. Before writing novels full time, she managed and co-owned antique malls, work that kept her close to family objects, local history, and the small details people carry with them.

She studied at the University of Maryland, later earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Baltimore, and also took language courses in English and Hindi. That mix of history, language, and curiosity fits her fiction well.

She grew up moving from place to place as an army brat.

Travel gave her a wide store of places, voices, and bits of lived history. She has said she still enjoys research, and many of her books feel built from that pleasure in the past rather than from big spectacle alone.

When she finally made time for the writing life she had wanted for years, she started publishing sweet, clean historical romance. Love's Odds came first in 2017, and from there she built out a body of work full of frontier towns, winter hardships, families under strain, and people learning how to make a home with strangers.

That practical, family-centered streak is one of her signatures.

Readers who pick up Mail Order Nancy, A Cook for Caleb, or Rescuing Christmas will find widows, children, letter-writing, and second chances woven into western settings. In Kris Kringle's Kuchen by Katrina and Lasagna by Lucia, food and holiday traditions matter almost as much as the courtship, which gives the stories a cozy, lived-in feel.

She also likes the occasional detour.

Hunger, written with Jane Lebak, steps into Texas Gothic horror and shows that she is willing to play outside the boundaries of straight historical romance when a story idea grabs her. Even there, though, the appeal is still character first, with ordinary people facing unusual pressure.

Photography has long been one of her outside interests, and she has also described splitting time between the Southwest and the East Coast. That feels fitting for a writer whose books so often care about travel, resettlement, and the work of turning an unfamiliar place into home.
