Author bio
Elise Broach was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and spent much of her childhood on the move. She lived in Georgia, Alabama, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, England, California, and Connecticut, and those years gave her a wide view of people, places, and the strange energy of starting over. Summers meant big family gatherings in Macon and on her mother's family's Indiana farms, the kind of memory bank a writer can keep drawing from.
Dogs and books were the constants.
Broach has said she started writing stories when she was six or seven, many of them dramatic tales about heroic dogs rescuing people. Just as important, the adults around her took that impulse seriously. Her parents, teachers, and school librarians encouraged her early, and that steady belief seems to have stuck.
When she was twelve, her family moved to Brighton, England. There she first read Shakespeare in school and fell for the sound of the language, especially after memorizing a speech from Macbeth. After high school she went to Yale, where she earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in history, briefly taught there, and later returned in a different role, teaching creative writing to undergraduates.
Her path into publishing was not quick or tidy. Broach started writing children's books when her youngest child was a year old, often working wherever she could manage it. Those first published books were picture books, and you can still see traits that stayed with her later, humor, momentum, and a real ear for the way children talk and worry.
Then she tried a novel. Shakespeare's Secret became her first, and it pulled together a few of her long interests at once: history, language, mystery, and the messy social world of school. The book follows a girl named Hero as she gets tangled up in a diamond hunt and a Shakespeare puzzle, and it set the tone for a lot of what Broach would keep doing well, building suspense around smart, curious kids who have to make sense of adult secrets.
That mix shows up again in Masterpiece, where a lonely boy and a tiny beetle get swept into an art mystery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The book later became a New York Times bestseller, and it is still a good example of what readers tend to like about Broach's work, big ideas made personal, real history threaded through adventure, and friendships that should not work but somehow do. In Missing on Superstition Mountain, she shifts to the Arizona desert and a treasure-hunt mystery full of legends and danger. The Wolf Keepers brings together a zoo girl, a runaway boy, sick wolves, and Yosemite. In Duet, a goldfinch, a piano student, and a lost-piano mystery pull music into the center of the puzzle.
Across all those books, a few patterns keep returning: kids and animals, unexpected friendships, moral choices, and mysteries rooted in real places or real history.
Broach still lives in rural Connecticut, in the woods, and her working life has stayed close to books. She has been a writer-editor for Scholastic Magazines and has regularly taught creative writing at Yale. That feels fitting. She grew up loving stories, kept finding her way back to them, and then built a career out of giving young readers the same sense that something interesting is waiting just around the corner.
