Dar The Ogress
by Marilyn Foxworthy
2023
After days in a cell, a captive fighter is thrown into a bare-handed arena match against an ogress. The brutal setup quickly proves there is more here than simple monster-versus-man spectacle.

Series background & context
Elfborn Monk shares a world with The Guardian Maidens, but it is not just a retread. Foxworthy has noted that it relates to that setting without requiring readers to start there first, which makes it feel more like a side road through familiar territory than a direct sequel. The overlap is a bonus, not a barrier.
The opening is harsh.
A captive has spent days underground in a prison cell and is hauled out to fight for freedom, naked and bare-handed, against an ogress who is even larger and stronger. That setup tells you right away that the series likes pressure, spectacle, and first impressions that may not be trustworthy. The title points directly at Dar, the ogress, which suggests that she is much more than a one-scene monster encounter.
The monk element matters too. As in some of Foxworthy's other fantasy work, martial training and discipline shape the hero's response to violence. That gives the story a cleaner action spine than some of her more domestic or philosophical books, even when relationships start to complicate the picture.
If you want another way into Foxworthy's fantasy world, this is a good option. It offers arena danger, a strong opening conflict, and the promise of discovering that the thing everyone calls a monster may have a fuller story of her own.
