Elena Gorokhova Books in Order

Gorokhova recalls growing up in Soviet Leningrad, where private family stories clash with official ideology. Her mother's wartime experiences, everyday shortages, and fascination with English shape a childhood marked by affection, secrecy, and longing for freedom.

After emigrating to America, Gorokhova navigates marriage, motherhood, and unfamiliar expectations. Her Soviet mother's arrival brings three generations of women under one roof, exposing cultural divides as she tries to reconcile inherited loyalties with her daughter's American upbringing.

In postwar Soviet Russia, Sasha dreams of becoming an actress and escaping her provincial hometown. A relative's wartime diary exposes family secrets, while drama school in Moscow challenges her to balance artistic ambition, love, and political conformity.
