Series background & context
Elemental Origins is the foundation of A.L. Knorr's main fantasy world. If you want the clearest starting point for her books, this is it. The series introduces the friends, the rules of the world, the elemental powers, and the mix of travel, danger, and identity that so much of her later work grows from.
The basic setup is simple and fun. Targa and her close friends head into summer expecting the usual break from school. Instead, their trips scatter them into very different corners of the world, and each girl comes back changed. Mermaids, fire magic, earth power, strange spiritual inheritance, and ancient energy all start entering their lives one by one. The first five books each focus on a different heroine, which gives the series a strong episodic feel while still building toward a shared finale.
That structure is one of the big strengths here.
Targa's story in Born of Water leans into mermaid lore and a salvage mystery in the Baltic. Born of Fire gives Saxony a summer in Venice and a rough introduction to fire magic. Born of Earth sends Georjie toward family history and earth-bound secrets. Born of Aether centers Akiko and the dangerous truth she has been hiding. Born of Air follows Petra into archaeology, desert ruins, and a power that feels older than memory. Each book has its own setting and tone, but together they show a world where the supernatural is ancient, international, and much bigger than any one teenager first suspects.
Then The Elementals brings those threads together. That matters, because these are not just unrelated origin stories. The friendships between the girls are part of the point. Their different gifts and personalities are meant to collide, complement each other, and eventually face something none of them could defeat alone.
The tone across the series is YA fantasy with a modern setting, but the books have more travel and mythic reach than a simple hometown paranormal story. Readers who like character-driven magic systems, strong friendships, romantic tension, and heroines learning to carry powers they did not ask for will probably settle in quickly.
If you are wondering where to begin with Knorr, begin here. Read the first five books in order if you want the full build, or know that the early volumes are designed to stand on their own before the ensemble ending. Either way, Elemental Origins is the trunk from which a lot of the rest of her bibliography branches.
