The Fourth Deadly Sin

by Lawrence Sanders

1985

When an East Side psychiatrist is bludgeoned to death in his townhouse office, Edward X. Delaney is called out of retirement to investigate. Interviewing six unstable patients and the doctor's elegant wife, he pieces together a tangle of therapy, obsession, and betrayal that culminates in another deadly secret.

Series background & context

The Edward X Delaney books trace the career of a New York City homicide chief who is most comfortable surrounded by witness statements, autopsy reports, and a stack of sandwiches. Delaney first appears at the edge of The Anderson Tapes, then takes center stage in the four Deadly Sin novels.

In The First Deadly Sin he hunts a well dressed killer who prowls Manhattan with an ice axe, attacking strangers for reasons that are hard to pin down. At the same time Delaney's wife is gravely ill in the hospital, and the book keeps swinging between the brutality of the case and the small, tender rituals of their marriage.

Retired from the force but unable to ignore a puzzle, Delaney returns in The Second Deadly Sin when a celebrated painter is found stabbed to death in his studio. The investigation pulls him into the art world and into the rivalries, tax fraud, and complicated family ties surrounding the victim.

In The Third Deadly Sin he faces a rare challenge, a female serial killer whose attacks seem tied to her own illness and rage, at a time when his colleagues do not want to believe a woman could be responsible. The Fourth Deadly Sin sends him into the consulting rooms of a murdered psychiatrist, forcing him to sift through the secrets of several disturbed patients to find the one who crossed the line into violence.

Across the series Delaney is no glamorous supercop. He is methodical, often stubborn, and willing to listen for hours while suspects and friends talk themselves in circles. Sanders balances that slow, procedural feel with sharp dialogue, flashes of rough humor, and a vividly rendered New York of side streets, diners, precinct houses, and cramped apartments.

The books can be read on their own, but taken together they form a long look at aging, work, and the way big city crime changes over time. Readers who enjoy thoughtful police work, psychological detail, and a strong sense of place will find plenty to explore in Delaney's world, starting with The Anderson Tapes and rolling through the sins in order.
