Author bio
Edward S. Aarons was a Philadelphia-born writer who built a long career out of crime, danger, and people caught in situations that are getting worse by the page. Born on September 11, 1916, he grew up in the city and later studied literature and history at Columbia University.
He paid his way through school with a mix of jobs, including work as a fisherman and a newspaper reporter. That reporter's eye stayed with him. His novels tend to move quickly, but they also notice the pressure points in a room: the worried witness, the suspicious cop, the stranger who knows too much.
Writing started early. Aarons won a short-story contest in 1933 while he was still a student, then began placing stories in detective magazines.
World War II interrupted that path. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he joined the United States Coast Guard and served until 1945, leaving as a chief petty officer. He returned to civilian life and to fiction, bringing a practical sense of work, travel, and risk to his stories.
Before Sam Durell arrived, Aarons wrote tough crime novels under both his own name and the pen name Edward Ronns. Books such as Gift of Death, Nightmare, and The Art Studio Murders show his interest in murder cases, false accusations, and ordinary people pulled into trouble. Under the name Paul Ayres, he wrote Dead Heat, a crime-photographer mystery.
Then came the assignment that changed the shape of his career.
In 1955, Aarons introduced CIA field agent Sam Durell in Assignment to Disaster. Durell, often called Cajun, became the center of a long run of paperback espionage novels. The books sent him from Europe and the Middle East to Asia, Africa, and South America, usually with a missing person, a hostile intelligence service, a political crisis, or a looming weapon at the heart of the problem.
Aarons wrote 42 Sam Durell novels during his lifetime. Readers who enjoy the series tend to come for the clean, urgent setups: Durell gets a mission, the available information is incomplete, and trusting the wrong person can get him killed. Each book works largely on its own, though recurring colleagues and the accumulated weight of Durell's work give the series continuity.
He kept a busy pace for decades, writing more than 80 novels in all. His books were translated widely, and the Durell adventures sold in the millions during their original paperback years.
Aarons lived his later years in Connecticut. He died in New Milford on June 16, 1975, at age 58. His brother, Will B. Aarons, later oversaw several additional Sam Durell books, but the core of the series remains the fast-moving Cold War fiction Edward S. Aarons produced from 1955 through 1975.
