The action moves across countries and into old buried history, which is a good summary of what this series likes to do. Ed may start as a cop, but he keeps finding himself in stories built on global consequences.

What makes the series work is Mulvaney himself. He is not a polished spy or a suave gentleman adventurer. He is tougher, more suspicious, and more grounded than that. He reads rooms like a cop, reacts like a soldier, and carries the kind of stubborn anger that keeps a thriller moving. The Aherns put him in plots involving ninjas, mercenaries, missing hardware, and deep conspiracies, but he never feels out of place because he is written as someone who expects trouble.

The setting matters here too. Chicago gives the books their grit, while Japan, Brazil, and the wider international stage give them scale. These are not quiet mysteries. They are chase-heavy, weapon-heavy, pressure-heavy novels where Ed is usually a step behind the full truth and one bad decision away from getting killed.

There are only two books, Yakusa Tattoo and Kamikaze Legacy, so the series is easy to try. If you like older action thrillers with a hardboiled streak, a capable lone protagonist, and just enough outrageous plot to keep things fun, Ed Mulvaney delivers exactly that.
