Earl’s Other Son follows Lord Magnus Campbell, the second son of a Scottish earl with more title than money. Magnus is a naval officer, but at the start he is more lounger than model servant of the Crown. An uncle’s allowance keeps him in the Navy, and his family mostly disapproves of him.

Then he is caught in bed with an admiral’s daughter.

The result is exile by posting. Magnus is sent to Hong Kong and given command of an outdated sloop. It is meant to remove an embarrassment, but it also gives him room to act. Hong Kong suits him, Miss Blantyre interests him, and China’s instability gives him more chances for action than anyone in England may have intended.

The series is set in the final years of Queen Victoria’s reign, with the Royal Navy protecting British interests across a world full of rival empires, pirates, mercenaries, and local crises. Wareham keeps the focus on trouble spots: China, Shanghai, imperial rivalries, naval promotion, and the messy difference between official policy and what officers actually do.

Magnus is not a polished hero. He is clever, errant, and often saved by the fact that dangerous postings reward decisiveness. His rise comes through violence, luck, patronage, and his willingness to take opportunities that more respectable men might pretend not to see.
