Eagles and Crows returns to ancient Britain, but from a different angle than the Boudica books. Here the central figure is Cartimandua, called Carti, a princess of the Brigantes. Karsak uses her the way she uses many of her favorite subjects, as a woman history remembers in shorthand, but whose inner life gives a writer plenty of room to build a richer tale.

The series begins in a tense political moment. Carti's father dies suddenly, suspicion falls on a rival tribe, and the already fragile balance around her starts to crack. Marriage, alliance, and succession become immediate threats rather than distant concerns. That makes the first book feel personal and political from the start.

One of the best things about this series is the atmosphere. Northern Celtic Britain comes through in henges, forests, windswept land, tribal tensions, and the presence of older powers. The Cailleach and other spiritual elements give the books a mythic current without washing away the historical struggle. Rome is there too, looming at the edges and then pressing inward.

Carti herself sits in the middle of clashing loyalties. She is pulled between tribes, between personal desire and public responsibility, and between what she wants for herself and what leadership demands. That gives the series a strong emotional shape. These are not simple books about picking the right side once. They are about living with difficult consequences.

If you like British historical fantasy that leans on queenship, diplomacy, and the collision of magic and politics, Eagles and Crows fits well. It shares DNA with The Celtic Rebels, but it is not a copy. Carti's story has its own rhythm, its own romantic tensions, and its own kind of precarious power.
