Dynamicist Trilogy Books in Order

The Dynamicist Trilogy is a continuous fantasy story set in a society entering an uneasy new age. For generations, genuine invention has carried a deadly price, but that old order is loosening. At the New School in Vercors, students are taught dynamics, a disciplined practice that uses mathematics, physics, and the manipulation of energy to alter probability. From the outside, it can look a lot like wizardry.

Dynamicist begins with Robert Endicott, an 18-year-old farmer from Bron who earns a place at the New School. He arrives hoping for a useful education and a future as an innovator. Instead, he meets fellow students Koria Valcourt, Eloise Kyre, Gregory Justice, and Heylor Style, and finds a campus full of competing ambitions, personal baggage, and arguments over what progress should look like. Outside the school, protests over genetically engineered grain show how quickly new ideas can become a source of fear.

Changing the world turns out to be much harder than getting into the right school.

Robert’s training has a real purpose, and real dangers. Dynamics gives its practitioners remarkable tools, but the series keeps asking what happens when people gain the power to change outcomes without fully understanding the cost. A shadow hangs over every experiment in the form of Nimrheal, a demon tied to the punishment of innovators. Robert is hopeful, quick to act, and sometimes too sure that he can solve a problem if he just thinks hard enough.

In Herald, the pressure moves closer. Robert’s prophetic dreams show a cloaked figure murdering people he cares about, while he and his friends attempt to master their abilities and make sense of growing unrest. The book deepens the series’ mix of school life, friendship, romance, social conflict, and dangerous magic. It also makes clear that the question is not simply whether change is good, but who gets hurt, who benefits, and who gets to decide.

Knight in Retrograde picks up four years later, with Robert and his friends trying to build something better as Knights of Vercors. Their plans take them toward wilderness, hostile creatures, returning demons, and a society still divided over scientific solutions. The focus broadens to give more space to the wider group, but Robert, Koria, Eloise, Gregory, and Heylor remain at the heart of the story.

This is a trilogy best read in order: Dynamicist, then Herald, then Knight in Retrograde. Expect a detailed magic system, an ongoing cast, and stakes that grow from classroom questions to a fight over the future of an entire world.
