Good As Dead

by CP Mandara

2016

Six people want Lainey Hargreaves dead, and the secret she is hiding could change everything. Vampire Mercer is supposed to keep her alive, but trust, hunger, and power make that a risky arrangement.

Series background & context

Even as a smaller series, Dying To Meet You has a very clear identity. The setup is strong and simple: Lainey Hargreaves has a secret that could change everything, several people want her dead, and the one creature ordered to keep her alive is a vampire named Mercer. That is enough to tell you the story will not be gentle.

Mercer is not a soft protector.

He is analytical, dangerous, and fully aware that keeping Lainey alive may require control as much as comfort. Lainey, meanwhile, is carrying too much to trust easily. That gives the series its main tension. This is not a wide-open paranormal adventure where the worldbuilding does most of the work. It is a pressure-cooker story about two people forced together by danger, secrecy, and the knowledge that death is never far away.

The larger stakes are big, because Lainey's secret is framed as something that could reshape the world, but the reading experience stays intimate. You spend your time close to the hunted woman, the predator assigned to guard her, and the threats circling them both. That tight focus makes the suspense feel personal. The danger is not abstract. It is right there in every choice Lainey makes and every command Mercer gives.

That last part matters, because this is still very much a C.P. Mandara series. The dynamic between Mercer and Lainey is built on resistance, pressure, attraction, and the uneasy question of whether the safest person in the room may also be the most dangerous. Mercer is the kind of character who can protect and unsettle in the same breath, and the romance gets its force from that contradiction.

The tone is dark paranormal suspense with a strong control-and-surrender thread running underneath it. There is blood, pursuit, secrecy, and a heroine who cannot afford to let the truth spill out before she is ready. There is also the constant sense that Mercer may understand the danger better than anyone else, but that understanding does not automatically make him easy to trust.

If you come to Dying To Meet You, expect a compact supernatural story that puts survival first and emotional safety a distant second. Good As Dead sets the mood quickly: hunted heroine, vampire guardian, dangerous chemistry, and a secret heavy enough to drag death in behind it.
