Series background & context
Dungeon Goddess takes a familiar dungeon-crawl idea and tilts it sideways by making sleep the doorway in. Jake Goodman is a former MMA fighter with severe insomnia. When he finally gets real sleep, he wakes in a dreamworld called the Orange Vale, and that dreamscape comes with dungeons, cores, monsters, and a mystery that refuses to stay on only one side of reality.
That split between worlds is the series' main engine. Jake is not simply adventuring in a fantasy land. He is trying to understand how his dream life and waking life connect, and what happens when those two tracks stop behaving like separate things. Characters like Catriona and Jake's dog Bruno help anchor the fantasy side, while the real-world pressure keeps the story from floating off into pure escapism.
The tone is more adult and more openly pulpy than Cooper's progression fantasy work under his main name, but the setup is still strong on its own terms. It mixes surreal imagery, game logic, and relationship tension in a way that feels built for readers who want a bigger, messier fantasy ride.
If dream-dungeon logic, strange overlap between worlds, and a lead trying to solve a deeply personal riddle sound good to you, Dungeon Goddess has a lot of appeal. It is one of the clearer examples of Cooper using a high-concept hook and committing to it.
