Series background & context
Dune Island is Kristin Harper’s series of coastal women’s fiction novels, set on a fictional Massachusetts island inspired by Cape Cod. Each book centers on a woman at a turning point, often returning to the island after loss, heartbreak, or a sudden inheritance. The sea, dunes, cottages, inns, and old family properties give the series its steady sense of place.
The first novel, Summer at Hope Haven, introduces the formula in a warm, grounded way. Artist Emily returns to her family’s neglected vacation cottage while grieving a terrible loss, and an old letter changes what she thought she knew about her parents. In Aunt Ivy’s Cottage, Zoey comes home after a breakup to help her great-aunt, only to find that the cottage’s future and a long-buried family mystery are tied together.
Later books widen the island’s collection of old homes and unfinished histories. A Letter from Nana Rose follows three sisters who inherit a beach house and receive daily letters from their late grandmother. Lily’s Secret Inheritance takes Lily back to a cranberry farm left to her by the aunt she had never forgiven. In My Grandmother’s Inn, Molly tries to save Hydrangea House while investigating a secret about her grandmother’s connection to its wealthy owners.
The newest Dune Island stories continue that mix of romance and questions from the past. In Aunt Violet’s Locket, Paige inherits a cottage from a great-aunt she never met and traces the meaning of a locket linked to a wartime scandal. The Secret of Ruby’s Lighthouse sends Meg to help restore her great-aunt’s inn, where a clue about the lighthouse may protect its future. A Secret at Windmill Cottage brings Caitlin back to an inherited cottage and windmill, forcing her to confront a tragedy she has carried for years.
Dune Island keeps its secrets well.
The books are connected by setting and shared emotional territory rather than one continuing lead character. Expect family tension, inherited property, old letters and keepsakes, local history, and a slow-building romantic connection. The mysteries are personal rather than violent, with the stakes usually tied to trust, belonging, and whether a place can still feel like home.
Each installment has its own central couple and family story, so readers can pick up a title that appeals to them. Reading in publication order is still a nice way to watch the island fill out, from Hope Haven and Aunt Ivy’s cottage to Hydrangea House, Ruby’s lighthouse, and the windmill cottage by the sea.
