Driftwood Books in Order

Driftwood has one of Brennan's most striking premises. When worlds end, they do not vanish all at once. Their shattered remnants wash up together in a strange place called Driftwood, where scraps of different realities keep decaying side by side. Survivors cling to whatever is left, knowing that even this afterlife of worlds will not last forever.

That setup gives the book its scale. Every fragment has its own history, its own customs, its own apocalypse behind it. Brennan uses that to create a place full of strange neighbors, incompatible truths, and constant loss. No one gets to settle in for long. The geography is eroding, the rules are unstable, and everyone knows that one day their last refuge will crumble too.

And yet the book is not nihilistic.

The shape of Driftwood is mosaic rather than linear. Interlinked stories, rumors, and testimonies gather around the figure of Last, a man who may be liar, savior, mercenary, legend, or something stranger still. That approach fits the setting beautifully. Instead of one clean quest, you get accumulated glimpses of a place too broken to tell in a single straight line.

What holds it together is tone. Brennan writes Driftwood as sorrowful, odd, and unexpectedly tender. People build relationships there. They remember what they have lost. They keep making meaning even when the larger universe has stopped promising any. The book is full of endings, but it is just as interested in what people do before the end arrives.

If you want fantasy or science fantasy that feels a little different from standard series architecture, this is a good place to go. Driftwood is about setting as idea, but it never loses sight of character. The result is atmospheric and thoughtful, with a real emotional pull beneath the big concept.
