Drew Cady Books in Order

Drew Cady is the kind of thriller hero who keeps trying to step sideways into a quieter life, only to get dragged back into the worst possible case. Jeffrey B. Burton's Drew Cady novels, The Chessman, The Lynchpin, and The Eulogist, are built around that tension. Drew is smart, stubborn, a little worn down, and never fully free of the job, even when he has every reason to walk away.

The series opens with unfinished business. In The Chessman, Drew is pulled back toward the serial killer case that left him physically and emotionally damaged. A copycat starts using the old killer's signature, and what looks like one reopened investigation quickly widens into a knot of power, money, and hidden motives. Burton likes cases that keep changing shape, and Drew is at his best when he has to think three moves ahead while somebody dangerous is already moving against him.

That pattern carries through the later books. The Lynchpin shifts some of the action to Minnesota, where Drew is trying to build a steadier life while working on Medicare fraud cases and helping at his fiancée's resort. Then a young woman's murder and accusations around his former boss pull him into something much larger, with homicide, espionage, and divided loyalties all in play. In The Eulogist, Drew heads back into a high stakes federal investigation after a United States senator is killed and a typed eulogy is left at the scene. The crime has links to other murders, and the case expands into politics, pharmaceuticals, and organized crime.

These are not small-town whodunits.

The Drew Cady books sit closer to the FBI thriller and conspiracy mystery end of the genre. The settings move between Washington, D.C., Minnesota, and other stops along the investigation, and the mood is tense without becoming humorless. Burton likes twists, false leads, and villains who are dangerous for more than one reason. Drew may be the main draw, but the books also make room for partners, bosses, love interests, and suspects who keep the pressure coming from all sides.

If you like crime novels where the cases feel layered and the hero has to keep earning every answer, this series is easy to settle into. Drew is not flashy. He is persistent. That turns out to be a good fit for Burton's stories, which keep piling new complications on top of old damage until the only way out is through.
