Dread Empire's Fall Books in Order

Dread Empire's Fall starts with one of the great space opera premises: an enormous interstellar empire has been held together for centuries by one immortal ruler and one rigid philosophy, the Praxis. Then the ruler dies.

Everything after that is the mess.

The books follow Gareth Martinez and Caroline Sula, two young officers whose lives keep crossing as the empire begins to tear itself apart. Martinez comes from a minor aristocratic family and has to fight class contempt almost as often as he fights enemies. Sula is brilliant, dangerous, and carries the sort of past that makes every promotion feel risky. Between them, Williams gets to show both the manners of the ruling class and the violence required to keep that class in power.

That contrast is a big part of the series. These books like fleet combat, but they also like dinners, uniforms, protocol, inheritance law, scandal, and office politics. A formal reception can matter just as much as a battle. That is not a distraction. It is how the empire works, and how it fails.

The first trilogy, The Praxis, The Sundering, and Conventions of War, gives you the collapse of the old order and the brutal work of surviving civil war. Later books continue with Martinez and Sula in a changed political landscape, where restoration, rebellion, and personal history all keep colliding. The shorter Investments fits neatly into that larger arc, and the later novels deepen the same question: once an empire breaks, who gets to decide what replaces it?

This is space opera with a strong sense of institution. Ships matter. So do marriages, career tracks, patronage networks, and the social rules everyone pretends are rational.
