Dragonlance: Preludes Books in Order

The Preludes books do exactly what the name promises. They go back before the War of the Lance and give individual Heroes of the Lance their own spotlight, showing who they were before the larger saga pulled them together.

That structure makes the line easy to like. You already know many of these characters from the main trilogy, but here they get room for smaller-scale problems, personal loyalties, hometown ties, and early tests that explain how they became the people readers later meet around the inn table in Solace.

Douglas Niles's co-written entry, Flint the King, is a very good example of the line's appeal. Flint Fireforge is one of the most grounded members of the Companions, gruff, practical, loyal, and the book gives him a story that feels built to match those qualities. A family death, dwarven politics, and the deeply unwanted possibility of leadership all fit him better than a grand prophecy ever could.

The tone across Preludes is usually more intimate than the main sagas. The stakes matter, but they matter first to the character, then to the world. That makes the books pleasant companion reads even if you already know the broad outcome.
