Series background & context

Dragon Tails grows out of Aja James's earlier Pure/Dark Ones world, but it has its own identity from the start. This is the more openly quest-driven branch of her fiction, built around dragons, myth, time travel, and romance. If you like fantasy that jumps between legends while still carrying an ongoing emotional thread, this series is very much in that lane.

The main through line begins with Erebu, a black dragon whose miraculous return to life comes with a price. Because of that debt, he and his phoenix mate, Sorin, are summoned to complete missions for the Jade Emperor. In Dream of Dragons, that mission sends them into Arthurian territory in search of the Jewel of Dreams. From there, the books keep widening, adding new dragons, new couples, and new pieces of the larger cosmic puzzle.

Every quest comes with a clock.

That structure is a big part of the fun. One book may lean into knights and tournaments, another into Vikings and Valkyries, another into Victorian magic, and another into the older age of the Dark Ones. The objects they seek, the Song of Destiny, the Wish of Wonders, the Myth of the Pale Prince, the Forgotten Truth, matter to the plot. But the real draw is watching each mission throw together people who should not work, then seeing love, loyalty, and desire complicate everything.

The cast shifts in smart ways as the series goes on. Ere and Sorin anchor the early books, but other figures step into the center, especially Benjamin D'Angelo, whose role grows larger and more personal over time. Along the way, readers meet warriors, witches, hunters, exiles, kings, and old souls trying to remember who they were before fate started moving them around like pieces on a board. Some books lean toward male-female romance, some include male-male pairings, and the larger found family around the heroes matters almost as much as the central couple in any given volume.

These books are big on longing.

The tone is adventurous, steamy, and emotionally earnest. There is danger, but there is also banter, tenderness, and the pleasure of seeing familiar myths reshaped into something stranger and more intimate. James clearly enjoys taking well-known legends and nudging them sideways so that even when the backdrop feels recognizable, the emotional path does not.

As the series moves from Dream of Dragons through Love of Dragons, the quests stop feeling like isolated assignments and start revealing a much larger design. That is why reading in order helps. Each book offers its own romance and mission, but the bigger picture keeps building, and the later entries land harder when you have followed the characters through all the earlier scars, debts, reunions, and near misses.
