Series background & context
Dragon Royals takes one of May Dawson's favorite setups and turns the scale way up. The heroine lives in a world where dragon shifters are always male, always royal, and always sure the rules were written for them. Then she shifts into a dragon herself, and the whole system starts cracking.
That is only the beginning.
Because there is no place for a girl in the Royal Dragon Guard, she has to disguise herself as a man and train beside the princes and warriors who would never accept her openly. That gives the series a strong military-school pulse in the early books, but it never stays only there. The heroine is juggling two identities, dangerous attraction, court politics, rebellion, and the plague-crazed Scourge threatening the kingdom from outside.
As Forbidden Honor, Dangerous Honor, Sacred Honor, Wild Honor, Royal Honor, and Everlasting Honor unfold, the story grows into prophecy, rival claims, fae lands, and a fight over who should rule. The men around the heroine are not interchangeable love interests. They bring different loyalties, rivalries, and wounds, and the series keeps pressing on those fractures while asking whether trust can ever grow out of that much deception and hurt.
The tone is high-energy fantasy romance with claws. There is training, travel, magic, throne-room drama, and plenty of enemies to lovers friction. Even when the world gets bigger, the core stays personal. The heroine is fighting for power, yes, but also for the right to exist in a place that was never built to hold her.
If you want dragon shifters, royal politics, and a heroine who changes the rules simply by surviving them, Dragon Royals is a strong place to start.
