The Dr. Thomas Parks books move away from modern Posadas County and head into the Pacific Northwest of the 1890s. Instead of sheriff's deputies and patrol cars, you get rough boats, muddy streets, logging camps, frontier clinics, and the half-settled world of Port McKinney. Thomas Parks is a young physician, newly trained and eager to prove himself, but the country he enters has little interest in making his job easy.

These books are historical mysteries, but they also lean hard into medical history. Havill has said that he began as a medical western writer, and that background shows. Thomas is often forced to think like a doctor first, then a detective. Symptoms matter. Supplies matter. Bad diagnoses matter. So do the money schemes, social hierarchies, and private resentments that can turn sickness or injury into something far more complicated.

Frontier medicine is never tidy.

In Race for the Dying, Thomas arrives in the timber country fresh from medical school and quickly learns that his host, an older family friend, may be running a large fraud built on useless remedies. At the same time, disease threatens the town. In Comes a Time for Burning, the stakes rise again when cholera hits Port McKinney and Thomas has to fight panic, limited resources, and the possibility that someone inside his own orbit helped the contagion spread.

What makes this pair interesting is the mix of scales. On one page, Thomas is dressing wounds or trying to keep a patient alive. On the next, he is confronting corruption, rumor, and the fragile politics of a boomtown. The logging economy, the weather, and the sheer difficulty of travel all shape what he can do. There is danger here, but it is usually the practical kind, infection, exhaustion, bad roads, bad actors, and too little time.

Thomas himself is a good lead for readers who like thoughtful protagonists. He is ambitious but not slick. He wants to do right, but the rules around him are often loose or bent. He has to build trust, protect the people close to him, and learn how much a young doctor can really change in a place that runs on habit, money, and brute force.

If you want something shorter and more historical than the Posadas County novels, this series is a good fit. The mysteries are there, but the bigger pull is the world itself, raw, medically precarious, and full of people trying to make a future in country that can turn harsh very quickly.
