The Dr Finlay books grow out of Cronin's Country Doctor stories and stay close to the world he knew best, small-town medicine. The action is set in and around the fictional Scottish town of Levenford, with some later stories moving to the lochside village of Tannochbrae. These are not big hospital dramas. Most of the work happens in surgeries, parlours, farmhouses, and on calls out into the countryside.

At the centre is Dr Finlay, a young general practitioner still learning the trade, the town, and the odd ways people hide what is really wrong. Working beside him is Dr Cameron, older, crustier, and far harder to impress. Then there is Janet, the calm housekeeper and receptionist who keeps the practice standing when tempers flare or plans go wrong. Their everyday rhythm is a big part of the appeal.

The patients matter just as much as the doctors.

Each story usually begins with something small, a complaint, an accident, a rumor, a stubborn refusal to call the doctor, and then widens into a fuller picture of a life. Cronin is interested in illness, of course, but also in pride, money trouble, loneliness, family quarrels, and the way a whole community can press in on one private decision. Finlay has to treat people, not just symptoms.

That is why the books feel warmer than many medical series. They mix humor with grief, sharp observation with kindness. Finlay can be impulsive. Cameron can seem severe. Janet often sees the truth before either of them says it out loud. Over time, the practice becomes a place where births, deaths, scandals, reconciliations, and small triumphs all pass through the same front door.

These are quiet stories, but the stakes are rarely small.

Across Adventures of a Black Bag, Doctor Finlay of Tannochbrae, and the later omnibus Dr Finlay's Casebook, the appeal is the same. You get inter-war Scotland, close-up medical work, and a steady sense that every patient carries a whole history with them. The setting matters, too: distance, weather, class, and reputation shape what help people can ask for and what help they will accept.

The series later became well known through radio and television adaptations, which helped fix Dr Finlay and Dr Cameron in popular memory. But on the page the stories still feel personal and local. If you want medical fiction with a strong sense of place, memorable supporting characters, and more humanity than heroics, this is a very easy series to settle into.
