Dr. Evan Wilding Books in Order

The Dr. Evan Wilding books are crime thrillers built around a man who reads the world differently. Evan is a forensic semiotician in Chicago, which means he studies signs, symbols, language, and the old stories people hide inside them. When killers leave behind coded messages, ritual clues, or objects with long histories, he becomes the person detectives call. His closest partner in the field is homicide detective Addie Bisset, who brings police instincts, grit, and a welcome resistance to academic fog.

That setup gives Barbara Nickless plenty to play with. At First Light uses Viking runes and ritual murder. Dark of Night moves into stolen antiquities, ancient manuscripts, and a death by cobra bite. Play of Shadows leans into Greek myth and a killer who turns Chicago into a maze. The cases are modern police work on the surface, but each one is haunted by something older.

These are puzzle novels, but they never feel like homework.

A big part of the appeal is the cast around Evan. Addie is smart, skeptical, and emotionally grounded. Evan's archaeologist brother, River, brings his own knowledge and restless energy when a case widens. Even the animals matter. Evan's dog and his goshawk give the books a lived-in, slightly eccentric warmth that cuts nicely against the darkness. Nickless likes smart people, but she also likes human mess, and that keeps the series from ever feeling too neat.

Chicago matters here too. Nickless uses the city as more than a backdrop. Riverbanks, alleys, museums, archives, cars, and university spaces all become part of the investigation. The series likes the way old symbols survive inside modern life. A murder scene can point backward by centuries, and an artifact can be as dangerous as a gun if the wrong people want it badly enough.

The tone sits somewhere between procedural thriller and myth-heavy mystery. The violence is real, but so are the friendships, the wit, and the emotional bruises everyone carries. If you like books that mix scholarship with suspense, or detectives who solve crimes by paying attention to meaning as much as motive, this series has a lot to offer. The novels can stand on their own, but starting with At First Light lets you watch Evan, Addie, and their circle deepen over time.
